French and English colonial explorers documented that the area was inhabited by First Nations.  Prior to the creation of the Province of New Brunswick, the area was settled as land grants.  The land grants were re-registered with the influx of the United Empire Loyalists in 1794.

Scenic waterways present much opportunity for recreation of all kinds, in all season - from bird watching, to kayaking, to ice fishing.  As well, the town has many service clubs and organizations.  The family-friendly community has many service available to residents and housing options are varied, from rural to suburban.  A short ferry ride away is pastoial, rural New Brunswick.  The City of Saint John is a quick trip away on the highway.  Saint John Transit offers a bus service connecting the town with all points in Saint John.

The Town of Grand Bay-Westfield has a strong focus on sustainable waterfront, recreation and eco-tourism.  It is a growing service and retail centre for the Lower St. John River Valley.  Over 100 businesses serve the 8,000 residents of the town and surrounding areas.
